Origins

Our sangha cultivates turmeric — மஞ்சள் (Manjal), on the fertile lowland plains of the Kongunadu region — the land our community forefathers chose when they came down from the mountains and settled where they could still gaze at it from their fields every day — close enough to be remembered and far enough to farm the crops they always desired on the highland slopes. This stretch of land is warm and temperate, bordered by the mighty, ancient Western Ghats.

Turmeric has not merely been used by our community since the ancient times. It has been lived to its deepest essence. It is rooted in the customs, cuisine, beliefs, and the daily rituals of our community and the Tamil life all over the world, that the very question of when it came into our existence becomes meaningless, since it has always been here like our tribal ancestors. The மஞ்சள் பால் — an infusion of turmeric powder and pepper in warm milk was made in our mud-homes for body pain and inflammation. Its dry powder was heated with coconut oil and made into a paste to apply directly on the wounds to soothe and heal them rapidly. The women of our community rubbed the powder on their faces each morning before the bath as a natural exfoliant, brightener and the most faithful daily act of skin care that the earth has ever offered them.

And then there are moments that mark our lives rather than merely sustaining it. The pre-wedding ceremony in which both the husband and wife are anointed with turmeric paste on the cheeks, hands, face and feet, and bathed by their community kin. The மஞ்சள் தாலி — a sacred necklace made with cotton thread, coated in fresh turmeric paste — is tied to the youthful neck of the bride. The most intimate of all offerings by the groom and the most lasting mark of their married life. The deities in our temples are bathed in its water, and once a year, the arrival of மஞ்சள் நீராட்டம் — the festival where people splash turmeric water at each other, rejoicing, laughing and glowing alive in the divine, resplendent golden color of the turmeric.

It is only the beginning of a path towards understanding our world where we are bound by its pure and protective essence. And this is not simply a metaphor. It is a truthful reality — and a beautiful one.

Signature Aroma

A deep, rounded earthiness carries the richness of the turmeric rhizome in the first breath, without any of its raw pungent edge. Most people who open a bottle of மஞ்சள் என்னை (Manjal Ennai) for the first time expect the aroma of turmeric they smell in the kitchen. Instead they find something softer, older and considerably more exquisite aroma — as though the distillation has taken away what was sharp in turmeric and rendered it into something that the nose wants to return to often.

Beneath that warmth, a subtle spice moves through — not the aggressive heat of the raw root but something closer to the warmth of ginger without its sharpness, carrying a faintly sweet-citrus brightness that lifts the whole fragrance and gives it a lightness that surprises. This is the moment when the oil reveals that it has more dimensions than the plant's reputation has prepared you for.

This is why Turmeric leaf oil does not belong to one tradition or one application. It is the most versatile oil our sangha distills — found in the fragrance houses of Europe and the puja rooms of Tamil Nadu, in luxury cosmetic stores, florist studios, aromatherapy centers, and meditation retreats.

The places where the intention is warmth and depth and requires a fragrance that the nose cannot quite categorize, but always chooses to return toward its aroma.

Testing Document

Every batch of our turmeric essential oil is sent to CSIR-CIMAP, Hyderabad, for Gas Chromatography testing.

Every plant compound is identified and measured. Every batch is confirmed for purity and found to be free of adulteration.

The complete GC report is published openly within the product catalogue — because an oil made honestly deserves to be verified the same way.

From Our Hands

You hold the மஞ்சள் என்னை (Manjal Ennai) — Turmeric leaf oil, drawn from the golden fields of the Kongunadu plains — and distilled by a community that has carried the reverence for this plant since the time of their ancestors.

The agricultural cycle of this crop moves between the two most significant moments in the Tamil agrarian calendar — வைசாகி, the sowing season, and தைப்பொங்கல், the beginning of the harvest. It is a long-duration crop. Seven to nine months from the seed to the rhizome.

Seeds go into the earth in May and June with the first pre-monsoon showers. Seven to nine months of growth follows — the leaves rising broad and green through the monsoon, accumulating the season's warmth and rainfall, and by January the transformation is visible when the leaves turn yellow. They dry and bend toward the earth, and it is at this moment — when the leaves have yellowed, that they are richest in the aromatic compounds.

Our sangha harvests the leaves and dries them in the shade, and then they are carried to our 500 kg traditional distillation unit. Dry wood is lit beneath the furnace of the still and 4 to 5 hours of steam moves through the turmeric leaf biomass, meeting the cold water in the cooling pipes and condensing — drop by drop — into the receiver below.

From 500 kilograms of turmeric leaves, 3 to 5 liters of essential oil are obtained.

The மஞ்சள் என்னை (Manjal Ennai) is then carefully collected by our sangha and stored in aluminium cans in the cool, dry shade of our farm storage sheds — until it reaches you, pure and untouched.

The same plant that has coloured every aspect of our community life, blessed every Tamil family and simmered in the cuisine of every Tamil kitchen. We simply carry the traditions of this beautiful land forward.
