Origins
Few plants in nature embody resilience quite like the jojoba shrub.
Growing in dry, sunlit landscapes where rainfall is scarce and the earth remains arid for much of the year, the jojoba plant endures conditions that many others cannot. Yet, season after season, it continues to thrive — drawing its strength from deep roots, patient growth and an extraordinary ability to adapt to extreme conditions.
The jojoba shrub of the Simmondsia Chinensis variety takes three to five years before offering its first harvest. It then matures gradually over the following years, producing seeds of greater abundance and richness. What makes this plant even more remarkable is its longevity — a single shrub can continue bearing seeds for many decades, often approaching a century of life.
It is a plant that teaches us धैर्य (Dhairya) — the Himalayan virtue of patience, endurance and quiet strength.
During each harvest season, the outer pod naturally dries and splits open, revealing the dark brown jojoba seeds within. The seeds are carefully collected, cleaned through traditional mesh screens and hand sorted. Rather than rushing them immediately through heated mechanical dryers, we allow the seeds to dry gradually in our solar shed for nearly a week.
Commercial extraction often relies upon the accelerated drying machines that shorten a week long drying process. But in our Sangha farm, we choose a slower path — allowing the seeds to move through each stage at a measured pace before extraction.
Once naturally dried, the jojoba seeds are taken to our 25 kg traditional stone mill, where the vaigai wood, similar to those used in our Sangha farm in the Western Ghats — is moved by our humanely raised Badri oxen in our sangha farm. The stone mill turns at just two rotations per minute, gently working upon the seeds without haste (moving just twice the circumference of the stone mill, per minute). For nearly two hours, the seeds are slowly pressed between the stone and wood, helping minimize unnecessary friction and excessive heat.
What emerges is pure, golden, stone-pressed, jojoba baby oil — created through patience, traditional craftsmanship, and the enduring natural rhythm of the bull-powered mill.
