Origins
The story of জাভা চিট্রোনেলা (Java Citronella) in our Sangha farm began not with its sweet and delightful fragrance, but with a powerful symbol of restoration. For generations, people living deep within the subtropical forests of the Eastern Himalayan foothills practiced ঝুম (Jhum) — an age-old form of shifting cultivation. Over time, however, the practice left some of the hillside slopes degraded and vulnerable to erosion. The red, loamy slopes that once produced food for the people of the higher plains of ইংলং কেলক (White Mountains), and for the common folk of the Terai, had become exhausted, turning once-productive land into a wasteland.
In the face of this challenge, our ফু — the elders of our community — came together and spoke with the forest department. They introduced citronella as a crop capable of stabilising the slopes and helped reclaim the fertility of the land. It soon became a source of livelihood for our people. And with time, the plant's aromatic properties were used to refresh the humid air of the rooms, repel insects and mosquitoes, soothe itchy scalps and dandruff, and deodorize the skin in the heat of the Terai.
In time, we understood that citronella had given us something beyond the restoration of the land. It had given us a new way to serve — a new purpose growing alongside the ancient ones.
Today, our Sangha takes pride in having reclaimed these slopes from the devastation they once faced. And even now, we offer what we grow with the same goodwill our Sangha has always carried — from the deep abode of the forest, in the shadow of the mighty ইংলং কেলক (White Mountains) — the Himalayas.
