Origins

In our Sangha farm, secluded and isolated in the alpine regions of the Himalayas, rosemary and lavender grow side by side — amidst cold, beautiful meadows, with the deodar forest at their edge. We hold it close to our hearts by the name हिमालय रुस्मरी (Himalay Rusmari) — though down in the valley, it is known simply as गुलमेहंदी (Gulmehndi). It grows between 5,000 and 6,000 feet above sea level, where the ancient Himalayas shape everything — pressing their austere character of high altitude, cold air, and rich mineral soil into the soul of every plant. Rosemary grown here carries that austerity of the mountains, along with a vitality that is uniquely its own.

Our Sangha began using it as they did most of the plants introduced by the forest department — practically, learning its virtues through observation and experience. The fresh leaves were crushed into a paste and worked through the hair before being rinsed away — a simple remedy used regularly to strengthen the roots and encourage healthy hair growth. Its dried leaves were also added to traditional dishes, releasing an exquisite aroma into the kitchen that drifted warmly throughout their homes. Later, the leaves were infused into carrier oil and massaged into sore muscles after long days of physical labor in the fields — warming the tissues and restoring comfort to limbs that had worked through the cold highland day.

There was nothing ceremonial about these uses. They were practical, daily, and quiet — the kind of wisdom that passes from elder to younger without formal teaching, absorbed the way all essential things are absorbed: through proximity, close observation, and the gentle repetition of daily life.

As with lavender, the step towards distillation came from the same necessity. We wanted to carry the clarifying and strengthening essence of our Rosemary into an essential oil — so that the vitality of this alpine herb might reach those who live far from the mountains, in a pure essence that remains faithful to its origin in the Himalayan abode.

And even today, we distill it through our own traditional methods — with the same unhurried way of doing things, day after day, deep within the cedar forests of the हिमालय (Himalay).

Signature Aroma

Open the bottle and the first thing you notice is that rosemary does not ease into you. The aroma is immediate — strong, herbaceous, and clean, arriving with the same directness as the cold mountain air on an open hillside. A crisp sharpness leads, bright and clarifying, the kind of scent that clears the head within a single breath. And beneath its layer, a cool camphoreous depth moves through — not harsh, but precise, like the deodar forest on a still winter morning.

This is why it is found in the spaces where attention matters the most — libraries and art studios, mountain retreats, meditation rooms, tea gardens, and other places where clarity, focus, and quiet attention are valued in that present moment.

Testing Document

Every batch of our rosemary essential oil is sent to CSIR-CIMAP, Hyderabad for Gas Chromatography testing.

Every plant compound is identified and measured. Every batch is verified for purity and found to be free of adulteration.

The complete GC report is published openly within the product catalogue — because an oil made honestly deserves to be verified the same way.

From Our Hands

You hold the हिमालय रुस्मरी (Himalay Rusmari) that was carried down the mountain on someone's back, and drawn from the traditional still by a fire our community has been lighting for generations.

Seeds go into the earth in February. By June, the rosemary stands ready — stems dense and upright, leaves sharp with fragrance, carrying three months of mountain spring within them. Our sangha harvests together in the alpine fields, cutting each stem just 5–6 inches above the ground, leaving the root to recover. In November, just before the first snowfall, we return for the second harvest of the year.

The freshly cut rosemary leaves are kept in wicker baskets and carried on their backs, down the mountain path from the hilltop fields to our 500 kg distillation still — a walk of twenty to thirty minutes through the deodar forest. When the leaves arrive, they are packed into the still immediately, preserving the freshness and fragrance of the harvest.

Water is added. The furnace is lit with wood. For three hours, steam moves patiently through 500–600 kg of Rosemary biomass, coaxing the essential oil from within the cells of the leaf. The vapour rises, condenses, and the oil separates on the surface of the receiver — clear, potent, and alive with the character of the Himalayas.

From 500 to 600 kilograms of fresh rosemary leaves, only 3 to 4 liters of oil are obtained.

The हिमालय रुस्मरी (Himalay Rusmari) is then carefully collected by our sangha and stored in aluminium cans in the cool, dry shade of our farm storage sheds — until it reaches you, pure and untouched.
