Origins

Cedrus deodara — देवदारु (Devadāru) or the Wood of the Gods. It is a name given not by poets or by priests, but by our ancestors who lived inside these forests for lifetimes and found no other name sufficient to fathom its spiritual essence. Our community has known this tree by that name across many generations than any single memory can hold. We have felt it deeply — not as a resource, but as a presence that has shaped the way we are born, the way we live, and the way we understand the world around us.

Our ancestors were born in houses made of this wood — the doors, the walls, the beams above the bed where the newborn arrived. And so the first thing every child of our community has ever breathed was the aroma of cedarwood. Before language, before any understanding of what a tree was or what it gave — there was that scent. Warm, woody, ancient. The smell of being alive in this particular place with हिमालय दिवधोर (Himalay Divdhor).

They grew watching the elders grind the wood into paste for wounds and bruises, watching it laid in the granaries to keep grain and spice from decay. And when the time came, they learned the oldest practice of all — how to draw oil from the wood. A hallow dug in the earth, a bowl placed at its base, an earthen pot of wood chunks sealed above it with grass patches, mud clay, and stone. A fire was lit for an hour, and the oil collected below in the bowl was pressed into muscles for relief, worked into the hides of cattle against lice and infection, applied to skin and clothes on the days that called for ceremony.

As the centuries passed from ancient to medieval times, the craft grew. Great stills replaced the earthen pot. The oil became the عِطْر (itr) of royal courts, carried in the palaces of kings who understood that cedarwood communicated something that could not be counterfeited — age, rootedness, and the permanence its essence carries long after it is worn.

And even today, our community preserves that ancestral tradition and distills them using our age-old craft, from the Himalayan abode, amidst the sublime meadows, deep in the cedar forest of the हिमालय (Himalay) — the same forest our ancestors were born inside.

Signature Aroma

The first breath is warm and deeply woody — full and unhurried, opening gradually the way this forest opens around you when you step inside it, until the scent surrounds you completely and you stop noticing the moment it arrived. Beneath that warmth, a dry, resinous depth moves through the breath — rich and ancient, carrying the character of old timber and highland soil. And at the very base, a soft earthy sweetness, quiet and grounding, that could only belong to a tree that has grown slowly at this altitude for decades.

This is why it has always belonged in everything that is sacred — in temples and ritual spaces, in mountain retreats and meditation rooms, in the quiet studios and tea gardens where depth of atmosphere is being sought by those within it.

Testing Document

Every batch of our cedarwood essential oil is sent to CSIR-CIMAP, Hyderabad, for Gas Chromatography testing.

Every plant compound is identified and measured. Every batch is verified for purity and found to be free of adulteration.

The complete GC report is published openly within the product catalogue — because an oil made honestly deserves to be verified the same way.

From Our Hands

You hold the हिमालय दिवधोर (Himalay Divdhor) drawn from wood that has stood in the Himalayan forest for generations, and distilled by a community that has lived within these trees for just as long.

We do not fell standing trees. Our sangha uses wood from fallen roots — trees brought down by time, by weather, by the mountain's own rhythms. And every member of our community who takes from the forest replants a देवदारु (Devadāru) in return as a thankful gesture. A reciprocity that is not a policy but instinct — the understanding, carried across centuries, that the forest and the people within it survive together or not at all.
In return for protecting the local forests, our community receives access to sustainably harvested plant materials — a relationship with the state government built on the same principle: that the preservation of the Himalayan ecosystem and the continuity of our practice are not separate concerns. They are the same concern.

The wood is brought from the forest to our sangha farm, where it is chopped into small chunks and packed into our traditional distillation still. The furnace is lit beneath. For hours, steam moves through the cedarwood inside the still chambers — slowly, patiently — until the vapour rises, passes through the cooling chamber, condenses, and arrives in the receiver as oil — drop by drop.

From 500 kilograms of cedarwood, 10 to 15 kilograms of essential oil are obtained — among the most generous yields of any oil we distill. And yet what the numbers cannot convey is the quality of what arrives in the receiver. Dark and rich, amber-warm, carrying the full weight of the wood it was drawn from.

The हिमालय दिवधोर (Himalay Divdhor) is then carefully collected by our sangha and stored in aluminium cans in the cool, dry shade of our farm storage sheds — until it reaches you, pure and untouched.

The wood our ancestors were born inside. The aroma they breathed before they knew what breathing was. We simply carry the traditions of our ancestors forward.
